It’s often easy to spot which side a particular person sleeps on by the vertical lines on their cheek. Over many years of a repeated favored sleep position, lines will become more prominent and deeper. The best way to avoid sleep lines is to snooze on your back. A more realistic strategy: satin pillowcases! Or buy the softest, highest-thread-count fabric you can.

If you’ve ever struggled with blemishes and breakouts, you’re familiar with how it leaves behind dark, red or purple marks that can linger for weeks or even months—especially if you’re a picker.

A post-breakout mark is dark in color because the inflammation from the blemish triggers the skin to produce pigment cells. The solution to get it to fade as quickly as possible is to use natural skin lightening, exfoliating and anti-inflammatory products. This combination will help acne scars fade faster.

But did you know that wearing sunscreen will help expedite the fading process? If the affected skin is exposed to sunlight, the UV rays stimulate the melanin cells – even if it’s cloudy outside – making the scar darker and redder in color and visible longer.

Aside from daily SPF preventing premature aging of the skin, it’s also helpful in reducing the appearance of blemish scars. And remember, you can get UV damaging rays through windows in your home or office and while driving in your car, so be sure to wear a sunscreen moisturizer 365 days a year, rain or shine, inside or out…

For acne-prone skin, it’s very important to find a sunscreen formula that doesn’t clog the pores or encourage acne breakouts. Check out our best-selling Osmosis Shade SPF 30.

During the winter months most of us blast the heat in our homes which can create an exceptionally dry environment. When the air is dry it seeks moisture and steals it from wherever it’s available. This includes moisture found in the soil of house plants, baked goods sitting out on your counter and yes, your SKIN! Of course, in summer, when the air is moist, the hydration levels in the air are higher so dehydration is less of problem.

Here’s a simple trick for replacing moisture in the air to help keep it in your skin:

After taking a warm shower the moisture collects and hangs in the air. If possible, do not run your bathroom fan or vent to eliminate the steam. Instead, allow the humidity to linger because this will encourage the moisture to remain in the air, which will keep your skin comfortably hydrated even well into your day! And of course, purchasing a humidifier for your bedroom is a great investment. Now get steaming!

For those of you who prefer a granular scrub exfoliant, here’s some advice: Use it OUTSIDE of the shower! Many people like to use their scrubs while they’re showering because it’s easier to rinse off the particles that way. I can always tell when a client is doing that because their skin feels rough and appears dull due to improper and inefficient exfoliation.

Why? Because the water on your face is diluting the particles meant to slough off your dead skin, meaning they’re not working directly on the skin’s surface and instead are competing with a layer of water.

Instead: Use your scrub over the bathroom sink on slightly dampened skin, moistening just your fingertips with water ever so slightly as you work the product around your face. THEN jump into the shower to rinse!

Mmmmmmm…..smooth..

Preventing damage is the best thing you can do for your skin and health. The most important step is to wear a physical based sunblock that contains Zinc Oxide and also limit direct sun exposure.

Using good skincare products on a daily basis that are rich in nutrients, antixoidants and amino acids are very important in both preventing damage and repairing the skin after sun exposure.

Our top 5 Skin Saviour products are:

Catalyst – Catalyst is a DNA Repair serum that is a summer essential in preventing damage and restoring the skin back to a healthy state. It contains the three amino acids that make up collagen, plus vitamin C to prevent and repair photo damage. Catalyst also uses zinc finger technology which allows us to repair DNA, increase cellular function and diminish cellular aspects of aging.

Stem Factor – Utilizing over 150+ different skin growth factors derived from pristine, adult stem cells, this magical serum improves all aspects of aging and skin damage. It gently restores the repair process and stimulates new cells to build collagen and elastin, heal hyperpigmentation and reverse aging.

After Glow Replenishing Oil – After Glow is an antioxidant and nutrient rich oil serum that is 100% pure and active with absolutely NO fillers and NO scent added. It is designed to restore and repair the skin while hydrating and replenishing it. This unique formulation contains all the lipids your skin is made up of, this includes ceramides, cholesteryl, and fatty acids. In addition to supplying your skin with every lipid it needs to function optimally it also provides a high dose of antioxidants and nutrients. This fast absorbing, nourishing oil will lock in moisture while protecting and restoring your skin.

Hyaluronic Serum – Hyaluronic Acid is present in every tissue of the body and its importance cannot be under estimated. Retention of water is one of the most important biological functions of Hyaluronic Acid, second only to providing nutrients and removing waste from cells, such as cartilage cells. The water-binding serum is a natural humectant that keeps skin supple and hydrated.

SKN Spin – restores UV damaged skin, increases the penetration of the products listed above. The SKN Spin is a 100% skin health promoting tool and should be a part of everyone’s weekly skincare program.

Hyperpigmentation is a condition that can happen to all skin types. It is an excessive stimulation of melanin in the skin that results in an uneven, darkened skin tone.

Hyperpigmentation is a condition that can happen to all skin types. It is an excessive stimulation of melanin in the skin that results in an uneven, darkened skin tone. It is most commonly the result of overexposure to the sun. Hyperpigmentation skin can include localized overproduction of pigment, loss of antioxidants, fewer nutrients to repair damage, increased scar tissue deposits, and loss of collagen and elastin. Skin that has more pigment seems to be more prone to hyperpigmentation, but with the introduction of chemicals, medicines, and overexposure to the sun, anyone can be susceptible. Research has also shown that hormones are a big contributor to hyperpigmentation as well and this is called Melasma. Hyperpigmentation and Melasma are the most difficult skin issues to treat.

When treating hyperpigmentation avoid using the harsh ingredient Hydroquinone. It may lighten the pigmentation in the beginning but long term it is not a safe and effective soluiton. It is an inflammatory and since inflammation activates melanocytes (pigment) the ingredient works against itself. Over use of Hydroquinone can cause a permanent deep bluish/black stain in the skin because of its irritancy level. It can also result in rebound hyperpigmentation once it is discontinued. Look for natural tyrosinase inhibitors (melanin blockers) like paper mulberry, which is shown to be as effective as Hydroquinone without the harmful side effects. Enlighten by Osmosis contains 12 natural lightening ingredients that are highly effective and fast acting. The lighteners and immune repair stimulators work on restoring the nutrients that have been lost, while lifting darker areas of the skin through exfoliation. Using a dermal roller like the SKN Spin will improve the effectiveness of your lightening products by creating micro-channels in the skin allowing the lighteners to penetrate the barrier and go deep within the skin.

The main culprit in hyperpigmentation is the sun, and the best way to help hyperpigmentation from getting worse is to protect the skin from free radical UV damage. Wearing a physical sunblock that contains zinc oxide is very important because zinc oxide acts as a shield on the skin preventing UV penetration. Shelter from Osmosis is the safest and most effective sunscreen for the face. Vitamin C is another important step in protecting the skin from pigmentation issues. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that has the ability to repair and protect DNA by elevating levels of the body’s natural free radical fighters. Vitamin C also has a lightening effect.

Treatment results vary depending on whether discolouration is at a deeper level called dermal pigment on more superficial called epidermal pigment. Photorejuvenation, Peels, Vitamin A Infusions, and Skin Needling are all the safest and most effective methods for adressing hyperpigmentation. There is no cure yet. Having the skin properly assessed by a skin care professional first is important in helping determine the level of pigmentation damage present.

What makes this oil so powerful:

Squalane: Squalene is a lipid derived from olives. Squalene protects your skins’ cells from oxidation, and repairs damage already present slowing down the aging process. Squalene plays an important role in skin hydration by helping to reduce water loss

Black Cumin Seed Oil: Black Cumin Seed Oil is anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative hosting a rich variety of vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids. This antioxidant rich oil absorbs very quickly. It is great for mature, aging skin, damaged, dry, cracked Skin, eczema, and psoriasis.

Olive fruit extract: the olive fruit is full of beneficial chemicals especially suited for the skin., among them oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, caffeic acid, catechin and rutin.

Rosehip oil: this organic, cold pressed oil is made fresh from the seeds of the wild rose (Rosa affinis rubiginosa) that grows in Chile. Rosehip oil is rich in essential fatty acids and is a potent hydrator for dry, dehydrated skin. It also contains trans-retinoic acid, tocopherols and carotenoids making it effective in restoring UV damaged skin. It has been proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and fade age spots. In clinical studies with humans, rosehip oil was effective in aiding tissue regeneration in dermal scars.

Pomegranate seed oil: Pomegranate seed oil is high in antioxidants that fight free radicals and promote skin regeneration. It is rich with lipids including the rare Pucinic Acid, which help heal inflammation and reduce swelling. It has been found to nourish and moisturize the skin, improving elasticity, reducing wrinkles and preventing aging. It has also been shown to help ultraviolet damaged skin. It is also very calming and aids in the healing and treatment of dry, irritated sensitive skin, and even eczema and psoriasis.

Liquid Crystal: this complex of cholesterol derivatives will supply cholesterol to the skin and will help other actives penetrate the skin. Cholesterol is a crucial component of cell membranes and skin health.

Phytosterols: this complex includes beta sitosterol, campestrol and sigmasterol. This active will help repair damaged and dry skin, has anti-inflammatory and conditioning properties and will normalize skin turnover.

Ceramides: an intercellular lipid crucial to the role of the skin as a protectant barrier between our body and the environment. Ceramides are critical to healthy, youthful looking skin.

Alpha Lipoic Acid Lycopene, Lutein, Beta-Carotene: These potent antioxidants work together synergistically protecting the skin lipids and membranes.

The outermost layer of our skin is called the stratum corneum consists of dead skin cells called corneocytes. These dead cells (corneocytes) are embedded in a lipid mixture consisting of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. These three types of lipids are so important to healthy, great looking skin.

Loss of these skin lipids results in an increased water loss and increased penetration of harmful compounds. This results in dry, unbalanced, dull looking skin. When your skin is deficient in these lipids it can increase the signs of aging in the skin, breakdown the barrier causing skin conditions like rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and serious dehydration. This dryness can increase the appearance of fine lines and make wrinkles appear larger and deeper.

Product we recommend to ensure your skin is replenished with all these essential lipids:

The Stratum Corneum is the outermost layer of the epidermis, consisting of dead skin cells and lipids. It acts as a barrier to protect your underlying tissue from infection, dehydration and irritants such as chemicals, free radicals and the sun’s ultra violet rays.

The stratum corneum works hard to protect you, and needs to be supported with protective moisturizers and oils in order to stay healthy. Look for a protective moisturizer containing occlusive emollients to prevent water loss. Your moisturizer should also contain antioxidants becasue they will fight the free radicals that occur from sun exposure and pollution that can destroy skin’s collagen. Lastly ensure you are wearing sunblock daily to protect skin from the sun’s UV rays. These rays can cause sunburn, wrinkles and skin cancer.

Products we highly recommend to protect the stratum corneum:

Their main function is to hold moisture within our skin cells, and maintain skin integrity by providing volume, elasticity and firmness. This helps the skin stay plump and provides mechanical support for skin cells. While a lot of focus is placed on the production of the collagen and elastin fibers themselves, it is actually the role of the GAG’s that plays an equally important role in preventing wrinkles. The most common GAG found in the body in Hyaluronic acid.

As we age our skin starts to malfunction at a cellular level. The skins micro-vascular system can breakdown and the loss of what we call feeder vessels has a major impact on the health, function and look of your skin. This is because without these feeder vessels the skin receives less nutrients, amino acids, essential fatty acids, protective antioxidants and oxygen. Your skin will no longer be able to protect, maintain, repair, or regulate the immune function. It is very important that your skincare program focus on building and maintaining this important micro-vascular system. The process in which the body rebuilds its vascular system is called angiogenesis.

How to ensure you have a strong, well functioning micro-vascular system:

Topical application of vitamin A on a daily basis increases the micro-vascular system. A study revelaed that after six months of vitamin A usage there was an 89% increase in the micro-vascular system.

Topical application of Stem Factor by Osmosis Pur Medical Skincare also leads to angiogenesis.

Treatments that lead to angiogenesis are Medical Skin Needling, and Vitamin A Infusion Peels.

Using a SKN Spin at home with Stem Factor by Osmosis Pur Medical Skin Care on a weekly basis is a great and very effective anti-aging program.

The Top Vitamin A Serums:

Correct and Renew by Osmosis Pur Medical– Vitamin A serums designed for normal skin

Clarify by Osmosis Pur Medical – Vitamin A serum designed for acne prone skin.

Mend by Osmosis Pur Medical – Vitamin A serum designed for rosacea skin.

All Vitamin A Serums and Stem Factor are available at SKN Holistic Rejuvenation Clinic or online at www.SKNShop.com

How can I get rid of my milia?

Milia does not have a pore or escape route, so to remove them you will need to have a professional aesthetician extract them. You can extract milia yourself, but this does involve risks!

External Extraction:

We highly recommend having an esthetician extract your milia but if you are attempting to do it at home please follow these steps. First, wet a face cloth with warm water. Apply this to the affected area on the face for a few minutes. Gently apply a sterile needle to the center of the milia to create a tiny opening in the skin. Wrap your fingers in a clean tissue and, using you index fingers, gently squeeze the contents of the milia out. Finally, cleanse the area of the extracted milia with an astringent.

Internal Supplements:

Supplementation with niacin has shown to be the most effective treatment thus far. Another important supplement is CoQ10, a potent antioxidant. CoQ10 is produced by the body and is found in meat and fish. It is used by the body to emulsify oils and increase energy. Emulsifiers make oils water soluble, like soap, which assists in their removal, and thus reduces milia

For safe and effective removal, book a consultation with at SKN Clinic in Yaletown at 604 568 6333.

Milia is a skin condition that can affect anyone at any age. Unfortunately the honest truth is that no one knows the specific cause or reason for milia on the skin. There are many possible explanations and contributing factors that may lead to their formation.

It is widely believed that this condition is due to an exfoliation problem, whereby keratin (skin protein) gets trapped in the skin. Research indicates that this is likely only half of the equation. The other half is an excess of cholesterol in the skin, where the body frequently deposits its excess cholesterol.

This in turn, leads us to a third contributing factor, which is a deficiency of sunlight. The body removes its excess cholesterol in the skin using sunlight, which begins a process of converting it into vitamin D3. Sunlight does not cause this condition, as some other health-related sources have claimed, and in fact, sunlight can cure it in some cases.

If you have milia it is best to have a professional extract them for you. If you live in the Vancouver area you can book a complimentary consult and a treatment at SKN Clinic for a practitioner to assess if it is Milia and have them extracted.

Ingrown hairs can be caused by almost every hair removal method, except Laser. Waxing and shaving can result in breakage of the hair. The tugging on the hair causes the hair to break half way while the rest of the hair remains attached. The hair then tries to grow but has been disrupted causing the hair to coil. The result is then a large red swollen ingrown hair.

Laser can effectively treat and prevent ingrown hairs from happening in the first place. The laser does not come in contact with the hair, rather the filtered light is absorb by the pigment of the hair which is then converted to heat. There is no tugging or pulling on the hair. The laser treatment can still target the hair inside the ingrown and the heat the helps eliminate any bacteria inside the follicle.

Laser is a great option for men who have ingrowns on there neck from shaving and woman who are prone to ingrowns on there bikini area. Book a complimentary laser hair removal consultation to learn more at SKN Clinic.

The goal in Laser hair removal is to permanently reduce the amount of hair. Not all hairs that are treated will be targeted at the same time, as the hair grows in different stages. Several treatments are needed in order to catch the hair in the active stage (Anagen phase). Treatment are performed every 4-8weeks for laser hair removal. There is no need to grow your hair between treatments.

Laser Hair Removal is Quick

When it comes to the delicate subject of pain, neither laser hair removal nor waxing is usually 100 percent pain free. Both methods can cause discomfort, especially in sensitive clients. However, for laser hair removal using IPL is a very tolerable sensation. Pain is individual but many people who have tried both methods feel that the pain from waxing is more intense.

Laser Hair Removal is a Cost Effective Solution

While laser hair removal initially costs more than waxing, it also permanently reduces hair, which waxing does not. Waxing is temporary and hairs are expected to grow back. In laser hair removal one can usually notice a strong reduction in hair even after just a couple of sessions. In the end you will save thousands of dollars by choosing laser over waxing.

You Can Still Shave Between Treatments

One of the disadvantages to waxing is that it can be messy and that it requires monthly maintenance, hairs also need to be long enough to be waxed. In laser hair removal, shaving of the hairs is fine and does not interfere with treatment. While both methods have their advantages and disadvantages, laser hair removal is the only one that offers permanent reduction in hair.

Say Good-Bye To Ingrown Hairs

One very important advantage of laser hair removal is the eliminiation of ingrown hairs. Laser hair removal is the only solution to ingrown hairs.

Sun Exposure: Treatments should be postponed for anyone who has had recent or upcoming sun exposure. Skin that has been recently exposed to the sun has more melanin (pigment) in the skin which can absorb the energy from the light rather than the hair. Sun exposure should be a minimum of 3 weeks before and after a treatment as the skin will be more sensitive to the sun. If skin will be exposed, use adequate sunscreen at all time.

When this method was first introduced in the 1990s the costs were considerably high. With advancements in technology and the increasing number of clinics offering the treatments the cost has become much more affordable. When searching for a clinic there is no need to pay the highest price, though it is important to find a clinic that has quality equipment and experience technicians.

Laser Hair Removal is much more affordable than waxing. The cost of waxing has risen over the years while the cost of laser has gone down. The average cost to have a brazilian wax is now $48 and laser costs an average of $120. After only eight sessions of laser you will have drastic reduction and waxing can be a lifelong hair reduction method.

The level of pain depends on the skin and hair type as well as your pain threshold. There is minimal discomfort that quickly dissipates. Treatments using IPL are much more tolerable and the treatment time tends to be much quicker due to the large size of the hand piece. As with all machines, skin may appear red and mildly swollen immediately after the treatment and can last from 2-24 hours. At this point cool Aloe can be applied to help soothe and cool the skin.

We always perform a complimentary consulation and patch test. This gives you an opportunity to experience the laser and how it will feel.

**Never have treatments at Clinic that does not perform a consultation and patch test. This is a mandatory step in laser hair removal that greatly reduces risks and chances of being burned. It is also required by insurance companies. So please avoid clinics that skip this step. It is a sign of there skill, safety pre-cautions and level of professionalism.**

There will be a permanent reduction in the amount of hair. It is important to understand exactly what permanent hair reduction means. It does not mean 100 percent reduction, but rather 50 to 90 percent reduction. New hairs can appear over time, but in most cases it is finer, and easier to manage. Maintenance treatments can still be done after your recommended sessions are finished to help with new hairs that have grown over time.

Everyone responds differently. Some clients have no need for touch ups for years after. Others will have touchups once every 4-6 months. However many clients are happy with reduction and new texutre of hair and feel no need to continue further treatment.

There are three phases of hair growth: Anagen, Telogen, and Catagen. The laser can effectively target hairs only in the active stage (Anagen). Each body part has a different hair growth cycle and the time of the growth cycle can vary from 4-8 weeks depending on the body site. The number of sessions you will need depends on many factors including area of the body treated, skin colour, coarseness of the hair, and any underlying health conditions.

Laser and IPL systems use energy in the form of light to destroy the hair follicle. The correct settings are chosen according to your skin colour and coarseness of the hair being treated. A cool sapphire crystal is then placed over a cold gel that is applied on your skin, followed by a flash of high intensity filtered lighted. The energy from the light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and is then transferred to the surrounding cells, which in turn are converted into heat. The heating denatures the cells, rendering them incapable of producing further hair growth. The heat kills the hair roots but the hair remains in the skin and will fall out 1-3 weeks after the treatment. Some hairs can actually fall out at the time of treatment. The hair being treated should not be tweezed or waxed for 1 month prior to treatments.

We use the Sciton BBL at SKN Clinic.

There are many dermatologists who believe that food and acne have no connection but there are many other dermatologists who know the truth, that there is an undeniable link between what you eat and your acne outbreaks.

It is best to begin by looking at how well your digestive system is functioning. Do you suffer from gas, indigestion, constipation, loose stools or bloating? If the answer is yes then you need to address and treat these digestive issues first. Clear, healthy skin is dependent upon a strong, well functioning digestive system. Supplements, acupuncture and nutrition are very successful in the treatment of digestive conditions.

If your digestive system is working well but you still have these acne outbreaks it is time to look at diet and lifestyle. It is very important to keep your blood sugar balanced and how you do this is by avoiding refined carbohydrates (white bread, sugar). When you eat these blood sugar spiking foods your pancreas responds by releasing large quantities of INSULIN. Remember insulin is a hormone and we need to keep our hormones balanced if we want good skin. So now we have ingested these unhealthy foods which cause hormonal fluctuations but they also cause internal inflammation in the body.

Tips on how to keep your internal system balanced:

  1. Drink water to carry away waste products the body needs water to carry away waste products.

2. Regulate the immune system and digestive system with acidophilus and calm down inflammation.

3. Increase your intake of essential fatty acids (omega 3 oils). I would highly recommend supplementing with NutraSea fish oil. Try to consume fish five times a week (Wild Salmon)

4. Drinking milk can be a big contributor to breakouts and we advise our clients to avoid milk and limit or eliminate dairy. Milk serves no benefits for the body. Especially when it comes to the health and function of our skin, milk and other dairy products can wreak havoc. Cystic breakouts (hard, painful, deep blemishes that last a long time) that are mostly on the chin, jaw line and neck area, can be a sign that you are ingesting to much dairy. Your skin is a large organ that acts as an excretory system that gets rid of things your body cannot tolerate. Dairy is harder to digest than other foods and can appear on the skin in cystic form. This is generally on the lower part of the face.

5. If your a meat-eater be sure to eat hormone- and antibiotic-free meats and poultry. What an animal is fed during rearing is very important. A corn/grain based diet is standard livestock fare and it results in a very high omega 6 content and higher overall fat compared to a grass fed animal. Grass fed animals have a much higher content of omega 3.

6. Eat a whole foods diet high in vegetables, fish and whole grains to detox. Vegetables are necessary to decrease inflammation. Eat vegetables that are bright in color they have the highest nutritional value.

7. Avoid inflammatory foods. These foods include coffee, chocolate, dairy, sugar, potatoes, corn, peanuts, and wheat. All these foods are difficult for the body to digest and create inflammation.

8. I would recommend following the alkaline food chart. Your diet should be 75% alkaline.

Your lifestyle, your attitude, and your skincare products all play a very important role in your skin health. If you want healthy skin for life you must be willing to sacrifice unhealthy habits. We promise your won’t regret it!

High Quality Unrefined Virgin Coconut oil offers naturally significant healing and health boosting benefits. Remember, I am speaking of high quality virgin coconut oil not low quality coconut oil that has been refined, bleached and deodrized, as this is disease promoting coconut oil. Virgin coconut oil is a medium chain fatty acid which means it is burning fat not storing fat. Virgin coconut oil actually boosts your metabolism, aiding in weight loss. Yet another reason virgn coconut oil benefits your health is because of it’s high lauric acid content, which lowers LDL cholestrol and inactivates pathogens that lead to disease. Virgin coconut oil is heat stable , so it is great to cook with. Below I have listed some health benefits of Unrefined Coconut Oil:

improves nutrient absorption

helps prevent osteoporosis

boosts energy

increases metabolism

aids in weight loss

treats digestive disorders

treats candida

increase hair health

increase hair health

protects against bacterial and viral infections

increases immunity

helps protect the liver

helps prevent cardiovascular dx

helps prevent cancer

decreases inflammation

helps prevent hypoglycemia

treats enlarged prostate

heals skin burns

I encourage you to start using coconut oil in your skincare routine. My skin is softer than ever due to my all natural coconut oil skin care routine. It also provides your skin with a free radical shield to prevent the signs of aging. The lauric acid in coconut oil is antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and also anti-allergenic and because of this is is extremely effective in treating burns, cuts, bites, stings, psoriasis, eczema, athletes foot and even diaper rash.

The benfits are endless when taken internally and externally. Be sure to purchase a high quality virgin, unrefined coconut oil.

Turmeric is a restorative food from the ginger family. Turmeric is frequently used in ayervedic medicine for its beautifying properties and is renowned as natures internal cosmetic.

Turmeric makes the skin soft and supple. This results from the blood purifying effects of turmeric, it stimulates the liver, increases red blood cell formation, inhibits red blood cell clumping, and increases circulation. This allows wounds to heal faster and tired cells to rejuvenate. Beautiful skin results from pure blood. The blood purifying effects of turmeric keep the body toxin free and help to counteract pimples, acne, boils and other skin conditions.

Turmeric brightens up and bring more color to very pale complexions. It adds moisture to dry skin.

How to use turmeric:

Turmeric can be used in place of ginger. It may be added to salad dressings, smoothies or through a small piece in the juicer to spice up your juice.

Turmeric oil may be applied externally as a beauty aid. To create a turmeric oil, mix 30 grams of turmeric powder with 1/2 a litre of sesame oil. Allow this mixture to seep in a warm place for two weeks, and then strain out the residue throug a cloth.

The anti-aging industry is constantly churning out the latest and greatest treatments to help us regain and preserve our youth. Let’s stop for a moment and think back to the days before technology and advanced skin care… What did the empresses of ancient China use to maintain their youthful appearance and vitality?

The Secrets of Cosmetic Acupuncture

Cosmetic acupuncture combines the wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine with specialized facial acupuncture to help you look and feel healthy and beautiful. It is the truest form of anti-aging medicine because it works internally to optimize your health while simultaneously enhancing the appearance of your skin. A practitioner specializing in cosmetic acupuncture uses the “meridians” that either end or begin in the face to stimulate and balance your energy, while also treating the underlying factors that contribute to the aging process. The results leave your face glowing, with tighter skin and a reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Cosmetic acupuncture is also used to reduce or eliminate puffy eyes, dark circles, dehydrated skin, acne, and rosacea. As an added benefit, cosmetic acupuncture can also increase your own natural energy, or “Chi” force, providing you with a complete sense of relaxation and rejuvenation. You can also expect such positive side effects as reduced stress, improved sleep and digestion, and a reduction in menopause symptoms.

Going ‘Under the Needle’

The treatment is customized to each client based on an initial health assessment to determine your internal health. Your practitioner then creates a treatment plan using acupuncture and, if needed, Chinese herbal medicine. You will also be given nutritional recommendations. It is important to remember that your face is a measure of your health; if you are healthy and balanced, this will be reflected in your skin.

During treatment, the insertion of tiny, painless needles stimulates the flow of blood, lymph, and oxygen, which nourishes the skin from the inside out. At the same time, a process called “positive micro-trauma” stimulates the production of collagen, creating even skin tone, a smooth complexion, and a natural, healthy glow.

Cosmetic acupuncture is both preventative and corrective, so you can begin at any age. Beginning these treatments in your late twenties or early thirties can literally slow down the aging process by boosting your collagen and improving the health of your skin and body. If you are in your forties, fifties, or sixties, these treatments will turn back the hands of time by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, resulting in tighter and brighter skin. Be prepared to glow!

The Results are In…

While you can expect a brighter complexion after just one cosmetic acupuncture treatment, ten to twelve treatments are recommended for optimal results. The treatments should be performed twice a week, or no more than one week apart for the first series of treatments. To maintain the results, it is recommended that you have a treatment every six weeks to keep you looking fresh. Your cosmetic acupuncturist will also educate you on proper skin care using natural but active cosmeceuticals. It is equally important that you feed your skin the same vitamins, minerals, and supplements that you give your internal body. After all, the skin is the largest organ – and the only visible organ – so it needs proper care!

Unlike a treatment such as botox injections, cosmetic acupuncture addresses the entire face. The aim of cosmetic acupuncture is not to eliminate lines and wrinkles immediately, but rather to increase the health of the skin, while tightening and brightening the complexion. Cosmetic acupuncture is a great option for those who are hesitant to undergo botox injections, but also a great option for those who have targeted botox treatments and want to boost the vitality of the rest of the face. Clients have reported a need for less botox injections due to the overall tightening of the skin.

Cosmetic acupuncture continues to gain popularity, and there is evidence that it works. A study published in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture showed that of 300 people who received facial acupuncture, 90 percent saw marked results after their first course of treatment.

One of the most attractive features of cosmetic acupuncture is that there is no downtime; plus, it is covered by most extended health plans. If you are looking to naturally boost the look and health of both your skin and body, than cosmetic acupuncture may be an excellent option for you. But don’t let just anyone touch your face! Do your research as not all practitioners are alike.

CIRCULATION

This has everything to do with your skin’s health and it is substantially overlooked by the skincare community. All the skin’s food, immune support, antioxidant and remodeling efforts all come from the blood supply. Every time you are stressed, you drink coffee or go outside in cold weather, your skin suffers a little because all of these things restrict bloodflow to the dermis. Vitamin K, horse chestnut and caffeine in skincare products are all designed to reduce bloodflow. There is no skin condition (Rosacea, Dark Circles, etc) that is better off with less bloodflow. That is why the utilization of Retinaldehyde, and Niacinamide, and other circulation enhancing ingredients makes such a big difference in the quality and health of the skin. Bags under the eyes are the result of vasoconstriction (reduced bloodflow and the correlation between loss of blood supply and the thinning of the dermis with age are more than a coincidence. Remember, it is a thinning dermis that is the primary cause of visible capillaries. The reason capillaries return after treatment is because the skin wants adequate blood supply in the area. The best way to reduce this is to build back the collagen/elastin (in the dermis) that covers these vessels.

Our skin begins the aging process in our twenties when the skin’s ability to retain water declines and oxygen levels reduce. We see our skin very gradually lose its radiant glow. In our late twenties and early thirties, our skin starts to produce less collagen, which leads to the formation of fine lines, some due to dehydration, and increased pore size. At this age, starting a skincare program to support skin health and reduce the acceleration and signs of aging is very important. Your skin health program should consist of daily skin products and monthly or bi-monthly skin boosting treatments.

Your twenties and early thirties are primarily a time of preventive skincare and what you do during these years can positively or negatively affect the health of your skin and the rate at which it ages. In our forties, skincare is preventive and corrective; this is a time when we notice more dehydration and accentuated appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and sun spots. There are effective anti-aging treatments and products that can be used to address existing signs of aging as well as prevent further deterioration.

In our fifties, fine lines and wrinkles can become more prominent and can develop into folds. This is a time when estrogen is decreasing, resulting in reduced elasticity and plumpness of the skin. Your skin tone can become more uneven and jowls can begin to develop.

Luckily, age is not the only determining factor. Lifestyle, nutrition, stress, skincare, sun protection and genetics are key factors that play a role in the speed at which our skin will age. Look for a good quality physical sunscreen that uses zinc oxide and or titanium dioxide and avoid the chemical sunscreens. The sooner we start taking care of our skin the better the results, the healthier and more long-living our skin will be, and the less money will be needed for more invasive procedures down the road. Below are the top five ways to keep your skin looking tight, bright and healthy.

Skin Tyte - An advanced light energy system that delivers infrared heat to the deeper layer of the skin where the collagen resides. Once the heat is delivered to the dermal layer it contracts existing collagen for a tightening effect, while also stimulating the formation of fibroblasts that will create more collagen. We highly recommend beginning these treatments in your thirties when collagen is gradually declining, because you will obtain maximum results and stop aging in its tracks. Great results are still obtained in your forties, fifties and sixties.

Vitamin A Infusion Peel – The Vitamin A Infusion Peel is a one-of-a-kind peel that repairs and remodels your skin. It works at a deeper layer where the collagen and elastin reside, making it a powerful anti-aging treatment, but it is also great for acne, rosacea, and hyperpigmentation. It boosts the cell turnover rate resulting in a healthier, more youthful complexion.

Skin Needling – This non-invasive, non- injectable skin rejuvenation treatments that target a diverse range of skin concerns. This procedure uses a roller with microscopic needles to target acne scars lines, wrinkles, cellulite, and stretch marks. It is derived from ancient acupuncture techniques and has minimal risk and long-term results. As the needles are rolled over the skin, tiny punctures are created within the epidermis and dermis that encourage the skin’s own natural healing response. It is a non-surgical procedure that will help rejuvenate and revitalize your whole body. It will improve blood and energy circulation, nourish your skin and increase collagen production to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, sagging and dull skin.

Medi-Facials – A medi-facial is a results-driven treatment that uses concentrated clinical grade, natural ingredients that replenish and repair the skin. These ingredients include enzymes, acids, and vitamins, plus potent antioxidants. Medi-facials are great for all skin types and skin conditions because they are custom blended at the time of treatment. The infusion of nutrients, acids, and enzymes results in a deep cleaning and nutrient-rich feeding of the skin, and finally a smooth polishing, leaving skin looking refreshed, radiant and healthy.

Home Care Skin Needling combined with Stem Factor:

Home care skin needling with the SKN Spin is a great addition to your daily skin care routine. Combining home care skin needling with a revolutionary product from Osmosis called Stem Factor the results are phenomenal. Stem Factor contains growth factors that have been derived from human stem cells making them much more effective than plant based stem cells. When we are young we have ample amounts of growth factors in our skin and that is what keeps our skin looking smooth, healthy and youthful but with age these growth factors begin to decline and this is seen as fine lines, wrinkles, poor skin function and skin conditions. Luckily with the combination of Stem Factor and home care skin needling we can re-build and replenish these vital growth factors. Great results are seen when performing skin needling in combination with Stem Factor once a week. This is a cost effective way to keep your skin young and healthy.

Stem Factor contains essential growth factors and when combined with skin needling will:

Enhances repair of damaged cells

Encourages formation of new cells to make collagen and elastin and improves strength and elasticity of the collagen structure.

Increases the number of macrophage cells which remove scar tissue, strengthen capillary walls.

Increases new blood vessel formation which is important to ensure skin is being fed vital nutrients to function and look its best.

Improves skins ability to fight infections

The safest, and most effective skin rejuvenation treatment finally comes to Canada. There are now safe alternatives to ablative skin treatments and lasers for the treatment of acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles and other skin concerns. Medical Skin needling is a non-invasive, non-injectable skin rejuvenation treatment that targets a diverse range of skin concerns and can be performed on most body parts. This procedure uses a roller with microscopic needles between 0.25mm (homecare roller) to 2.0 mm (clinical roller) long. It is derived from ancient acupuncture techniques and mesotherapy. As the needles are rolled over the skin, tiny punctures are created within the epidermis and dermis that encourage the skin’s own natural healing response stimulating the production of collagen and elastin and the release of growth factors. One of the most exciting advantages of this treatment is that it can safely be performed on both darker and lighter skin types. Plus there is minimal downtime and discomfort and an almost immediate outcome.

With skin needling, collagen and elastin deposition are increased and the result is thicker, firmer, healthier skin. The healing period is short compared to other procedures only 24-28 hours because needling leaves the epidermis(your outermost layer of skin) intact. This procedure is less expensive, less risky, and just as effective if not more than laser treatments and other ablative skin treatments. Your practitioner will use a topical numbing cream to minimize discomfort.

Some of the key benefits include:

Stimulate the production of collagen tightening the skin

Eliminate or reduce crows feet and lip lines

Eliminate or reduce forehead lines and frown lines

Assist in the absorption of cosmetic products

Reduce the appearance of wrinkles, pigmentation and sun damage

Treat acne scars and chicken pock scars

Reduce the appearance of scarring and stretch marks

Reduce the appearance of enlarged pores

Helps with Rosacea

Helps with hair restoration

What makes skin needling such an effective treatment option is a result of what is happening to the skin after it is needled over the next three plus months. Your skin will appear to be visibly healed after 24-48 hours but the healing process is continuously happening beneath the surface for several months. This natural healing process is what makes the treatment so effective.

The fibroblast cells which are the cells that make collagen and elastin will migrate to the injured site and produce and deposit new extracellular matrix. The new matrix cross-links and organizes itself and over time, new collagen will:

fill in any depressed scars and fine lines and wrinkles that are present

break down and reorganize any scar tissue

Is Benzoyl peroxide safe? Will it cause my skin to age with long term use?

Benzoyl peroxide is ingredient used in many acne products that generates free radicals and skin damage. It promotes skin damage similar to unprotected sun exposure. The redness caused by the application of Benzoyl peroxide to the skin is a visible demonstration of oxidative stress or free radicals causing skin damage. Repeated application of Benzoyl peroxide has been found to cause premature skin aging. The extent of skin damage from Benzoyl peroxide is determined by the concentration of the Benzoyl peroxide, the frequency of application and the duration of its use.

More disturbing facts about Benzoyl Peroxide:

Dries out most skin types, and in some cases excessive dryness and flaking.

Can bleach your eyebrows and hair.

Can cause increased redness and irritation.

Makes your skin more susceptible to sun damage.

Benzoyl peroxide used to be labelled as a category 1 acne treatment product by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), then they changed it to a category 3 product which means the safety is unknown. At this point in time, it still remains under that category.

Repeated sun exposure or BP use generates free radicals that damage the skin’s structure and cellular DNA, resulting in premature aging of the skin.

BP generates free radicals which interferes with and slows down the healing process. The red and brown marks that are a part of the acne healing process may last weeks longer when BP is a regular part of the daily regimen.

The product is often tested on animals.

Even though your skin may have excess oil, it still needs hydration and protection from a moisturizer. The key is finding a light moisturizer that will still keep the skin hydrated without clogging pores. Avoid using moisturizers that contain parabens, propylene glycol, synthetic fragrances, PEGs, or artificial colours. Look for more natural ingredients like hylauronic acid, which helps bind moisture in the skin without being too heavy or congesting the skin.

Moisturizer we Recommend:

Quench by Osmosis – Quench is an all natural moisturizer that provides various lipids to restore the epidermal barrier. The product contains natural moisturizing factors and lipids found naturally in the skin to create a light feeling, hydrated skin.

Sunshine has a wonderful effect on our mood and energy. It reduces the risk of several cancers and is proven to help many other diseases and health concerns. However, between holes in the ozone and solar flares, we find ourselves needing more protection than ever. New innovations have made it possible to enjoy the sun guilt-free, in moderation of course. When choosing sun protection it is important to choose a Physical sunblock rather than a Chemical sunscreen.

A physical sunblock does not penetrate into the skin and therefore does not clog the pores. Physical sunblocks such as Zinc Oxide work by reflecting the light particles up and out of the skin so there is no absorption of energy, no inflammation and no clogging of pores that can lead to a breakout.

Chemical sunscreens on the other hand penetrate the skin which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. They also allow light particles into the skin before they are destroyed. . A study done several years ago showed that 10 minutes of sun exposure on unprotected skin resulted in less inflammation after one hour than skin exposed to 10 minutes with artificial sunscreens used. This occurs because these artificial sunscreens become their own source of free radicals after they are hit by the sun. This can cause inflammation as well as breakouts.

Recommend product: Osmosis Shelter SPF 29+. Shelter provides broad spectrum protection, antioxidants and moisturizers the skin. Shelter uses the most advanced topical sunblock, silica-coated zinc (18%), which blocks both UVA and UVB wavelengths.

You can purchase Shelter at SKN Holistic Rejuvenation Clinic or online at www.SKNShop.com

When purchasing Vitamin C it should be in a powder form.

Vitamin C oxidizes when exposed to air so getting it in a stable form is extremely important for its efficacy. You can tell if Vitamin C has become oxidized if it has turned brown. Vitamin C needs to be in a container protected from light and air. Once oxidized, Vitamin C no longer benefits the skin and can even harm the skin by causing the formation of free radicals. Since Vitamin C had been proven to have only a 2% absorption rate, we recommend using a stable powder form of pure Vitamin C mixed in with a liposomal serum which will increase its penetration by 1000%.

What is it?

Vitamin C, also known as L-Ascorbic acid or L-Ascorbate, is considered a super antioxidant that works to fights off free radicals that are causing permanent damage to our cells. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that feed on healthy cells, increasing oxidation throughout the body. Vitamin C has the ability to repair and protect DNA by elevating levels of the body’s natural free radical fighters. Vitamin C is an important factor in collagen synthesis and protects the skin from photo aging and photo damage. It pairs very well with Vitamin E, which works to neutralize fat soluble radicals. Vitamin C helps regenerate Vitamin E while Vitamin E helps protect Vitamin C.

What does it do for the skin?

Brightens skin

Reduces pigmentation, brightens, fights photo damage

Essential factor for normal function, maintenance and structural stability of collagen

Protects against UVA and UVB damage such as redness and formation of abnormal cells

What skin type/ conditions benefit from Vitamin C?

Acne skin benefits from it because it helps reduce the appearance of pigmented scarring

Aging skin benefits because it helps with the synthesis and maintenance of collagen

Hyper pigmented skins benefit from its brightening effects

All skin types/conditions benefit from its brightening effects and its protection from UVA and UVB.

What is it?

Beta-glucan stimulates macrophage activity, which plays a crucial role in the skin by scavenging scar tissue and debris, removing bacteria, stimulating immune repair and providing a wealth of growth factors that feed, renew and remodel the skin.

What does it do for the skin?

Increases macrophage activity to clean up scar tissue at the dermal/epidermal junction. This helps to remodel the skin by clearing up pathways of communication between the epidermis and dermis.

Supports the skins healing process.

Improves and supports immune function of the skin.

Can be used to treat burns or wounds.

What skin type/conditions benefit from Beta Glucan?

Acne skin benefits from Beta-glucan greatly because of the macrophage activity which helps to support the healing of and works to decrease scarring from breakouts by increasing skin immunity.

Aging skin benefits from the removal of scar tissue, remodelling the skin and making room for new well formed cells and increased cell communication.

Hyper pigmented skins benefits from the removal of scar tissue at the dermal/epidermal junction making way for improved cellular crosstalk which can help improve melanocytes (and general cell) function.

Rosacea skin conditions benefit greatly as it allows for easier communication between the epidermis and the dermis resulting in improved skin function while reducing redness in the skin because of its anti-inflammatory properties.

When choosing your sun protection the choices can be overwhelming. There are two types of sun protection but their ability to protect you and your skin from sun damage vary dramatically. Sunscreens are chemical agents that actually absorb the sun’s rays; sunblocks are minerals that reflect the rays.

SUNSCREENS: The unsafe choice.
Sunscreens will prevent your skin from burning and can protect you from pre-cancerous lesions. What is important for you to know is that many of ingredients in sunscreens are chemicals and they have dertrimental effects on both the skin and the body. It is a proven fact that chemical sunscreens create free radicals when exposed to UV light. One of the most damaging sunscreens of all is avobenzone. Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that tear down DNA, cell walls, and much more. Sunscreens also can cause estrogenic side effects in the body as well as inflammatory changes and this increases based on the SPF. The higher the SPF the more estrogenic and inflammatory based ingredients. When using these sunscreens it can increase your chances of skin cancer and accelerates the aging of the skin.

SUNBLOCKS: The safe and effective choice.
Currently there are only two sunblocks which are also referred to as physical protection. These two sunblocks are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. They are found in makeup and in sunblock creams. They are naturally-occurring minerals that provide good, broad spectrum coverage of both UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreens (not sunblocks) are designed to absorb the sun’s rays, making them much more likely to break down into damaging by products than sunblocks are. Zinc and titanium can also become free radicals in the skin but to a much lesser degree. For example zinc oxide has only one oxygen molecule, so it will create half as much damage as titanium dioxide with its two oxygen molecules if and when it is broken down. However both of these molecules have less tendency to become free radicals in the skin because of their reduced absorption.

The amount of inflammation from zinc and titanium is much lower than what is created by the breakdown of sunscreens. Today some sunblock minerals are with silica, which is an element that softens the skin and strengthens its connective tissue. Also when silica coats the zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, it serves another purpose: to prevent the minerals from becoming free radicals in the skin. For this reason, we prefer silica-coated zinc as the safest broad-spectrum protection currently on the market.

Best Sunblocks:

Coola Plant UV Sunblock for the Face

Coola Plant UV Sunblock for the Body

Coola Lip Protection

Shelter by Osmosis Pur Medical

Best Mineral Makeup That Contains Sunblock:

Young Blood – This is our all time favourite mineral makeup. It gives sheer to camaflouge coverage and never looks cakey. Remember to never rely on your makeup for your complete sun protection. You should always wear a sunblock in addition to mineral makeup.

Shelter by Osmosis and Youngblood can be purchased at SKN Holistic Rejuvenation Clinic or online at www.SKNShop.com We will be stocking Coola beginning in May.

Vitamin A comes in many forms. Each form of vitamin A varies in its potency, effectiveness, and level of irritation.

Retinyl Palmitate

Retinol

Retinaldehyde (our favourite)

Retinoic Acid

Retinaldehyde is the most exciting and well-researched ingredient in skincare today. For years it has been researched and applauded as one of the most active ingredients in the skin but has been too expensive to put into skincare. In the body, we convert Beta Carotene into Retinol, Retinol into Retinaldehyde and Retinaldehyde into Retinoic Acid. All of these Vitamin A derivatives have important and proven activity in the skin in an escalating level from Beta Carotene to Retinoic Acid respectively. Retinoic Acid is the only ingredient that requires a prescription even though Retinaldehyde has a similar activity level. Both Retinaldehyde and Retinoic acid are substantially more active (500 times more!) than their Vitamin A counterparts which means that we can use smaller amounts to achieve the desired results.

Retinoic acid and all retinols are most effective in their “All Trans” configuration and that is how most Retin A is delivered.

All Trans Retinoic Acid has by far the most receptors of any form of Vitamin A and that is what makes it so potent. However, chronic stimulation (as is the case for every receptor in the body), results in fewer active receptors and thus diminished results over time. All Trans Retinaldehyde is the best form possible of the choices listed above. In addition to having its own receptor activity, it is the immediate precursor of Retinoic Acid so the skin will convert a significant amount to that form upon application. However, there will never be an over-stimulation problem because the skin regulates the conversion and just makes what it needs. Research has repeatedly shown that Retinaldehyde has a similar activity profile to Retin A but with much less irritation.

We still have the same issue of poor penetration, however. All of the Vitamin A derivatives have a tough time (due to their size) penetrating through the epidermis. For vitamin A to be effective and perform its benefits it must reach the second layer called the dermis. This is where all the collagen and elastin resides. The solution is liposome penetrating technology.

Liposome technology allows the All Trans Retinaldehyde to penetrate to the deeper layer called the dermis. Plus the liposome also prevents oxidization of the All Trans Retinaldehyde. Until recently there was no way to put this extremely expensive ingredient in skincare but Osmosis has made it happen by partnering with a lab to keep the costs affordable to the consumer

*All Trans Retinaldehyde is found in all the following Osmosis Pur Medical Serums:

Correct

Renew

Calm

Clarify

Enlighten

Treatments that use Vitamin A in the All Trans Retinaldehyde Form:

Vitamin A Infusion Peel

All Medi-Facial offered at SKN Clinic

*Vitamin A should not be used during pregnancy or breast feeding. It should also be avoided for one year after using accutane.*

Here is a list of all the Osmosis Serums containing vitmain A in the form All Trans Retinaldehyde. The most potent and least irritating form of vitamin A.

Correct - This is level 1 vitamin A serum for anti-aging and normal skin. It contains .05% Trans-Retinaldehyde. After using this vitamin A serum for 3 months you can advance to Renew which contains double the Trans-Retinaldehyde.

Renew - This is the level 2 vitamin A serum for anti-aging and normal skin. It contains .1% Trans-Retinaldehyde.

Clarify - This is the vitamin A serum for acneic skin. It contains .075% Trans-Retinaldehyde. It also includes mandelic acid for anti-bacterial support, willow herb to reduce inflammation, as well as beta glucan to boost the immune function of the skin stimulating macrophage activity to eat up scar tissue, and other debris.

Enlighten- This is the vitamin A serum for hyperpigmentation and melasma. It contains .05% Trans-Retinaldehyde. It also contains multiple safe lightening agents, called tyrosinase inhibitors, such as paper mulberry and arbutin. None of our products contain hydroquinone. Enlighten reduces the skins ability to work around the tyrosinase inhibitors because each lightener uses a slightly different method on the melanocyte and they all work together with great synergy. The results are greatly enhanced when combined with the SKN Spin. It evens skin tone and fades hyperpigmentation while promoting skin health and preventing further pigmentation

You can purchase these serums and other Osmosis products at SKN Holistic Rejuvenation Clinic or online at www.SKNShop.com

Vitamin A provides extensive benefits for the skin. It improves the texture of Photo Damaged skin, reduces fine wrinkles, and helps with hyperpigmentation. Vitamin A also remodels scar tissue , promotes collagen regeneration, and increases the skins firmness and elasticity. Lastly, it is one of the most important ingredients in the treatment of acne because it regulates sebaceous gland activity.

In the case of acne vitamin A will regulate the activity of the sebaceous gland controlling the the frequency and occurrence of acneic outbreaks. Retinaldehyde is one of the only proven effective treatments for rosacea so it is key when working with rosacea. . Long term skin conditions such as acne and rosacea can degrade the collagen and elastin of the skin essentially accelerating the aging process due to prolonged inflammation. So Vitamin A is your multi-purpose skincare ingredient keeping your skin young and healthy.

The safest and most effective form of vitamin A is All Trans Retinaldehyde.

The following Osmosis serums contain vitamin A in the form All Trans Retinaldehyde:

To properly address Rosacea the focus has to be the rebuilding of the dermis (deeper layer of the skin) which is rapidly depleted as a result of the chronic inflammation of the skin. It is extremely important to calm the skin without interfering with wound repair. Skin that is in constant repair uses more antioxidants, enzymes, proteins, and lipids. So we need to be supplying the skin with these essential nutrients. Another main goal is to eliminate inflammation, while supporting and strengthening the capillary walls so they do not break.

Your products should contain a variety of antioxidants and vitamins that are anti-inflammatory, as well as support and heal the skin. Retinaldehyde is one of the only skincare ingredients that (form of vitamin A) has been shown to improve Rosacea and it does so without irritating the skin. Willow herb is a key ingredient you need to find in your rosacea products because it is a natural but potent anti-inflammatory. The final key ingredient to look for is beta glucan it works to strengthen the immune function of the skin.

Osmosis’ Stem Factor uses stem cell technology from humans–not plants or animals. It is also used in a very unique and effective way because they are not using the actual stem cells in the bottle but rather a combination of stem cells (IPS and Mesenchymal) and fibroblast cells that are fed and nourished to stimulate the production of potent growth factors. Human stem cells and fibroblasts make over 150 different growth factors that are naturally found in your skin. As we get older, the number of growth factors declines which affects new cell formation, skin nutrition and immune repair activity, all of which are critical to keeping our skin young. Osmosis is the only company offering the combination of these cells.

Other companies offer individual growth factors made by bacteria that distort healthy skin by over-emphasizing a particular response in the skin. This reduces the skin’s ability to perform sufficient repair. Many companies are touting plant stem cells as a way to rejuvenate the skin. This does not make physiologic sense: the skin is not going to convert from a foreign plant cell into human tissue of any kind. Animal stem cells and/or DNA from animal sources also suffer the same fate of being considered an intruder more than a saviour. The other issue with both animal and plant stem cells is the viability of the material. All cells are very fragile and are unable to withstand the stresses of harvesting, shipping and manufacturing.

StemFactor sets itself apart from other stem cell products on the market. It is more effective than plant based growth factors because it communicates to our cells in the language they understand. The process of gathering the growth factors has been perfected to maximize the stability and penetration while giving the skin the tools it needs to function optimally. You will find its benefits go beyond anti-aging and include helping acne, rosacea, and hyperpigmentation because it strengthens our skin’s immune system… which improves all skin conditions!
